Feature requests for open source, without the issue noise

Feature requests pile up in GitHub issues next to bug reports, and the only way to vote is a 👍 reaction that needs a GitHub account. A UserNote board gives your users a separate place to suggest features and vote on them, with no account at all, plus a public roadmap of what’s planned. Open source projects get Pro free for 12 months.

The offer

  • Who: any project with a public repository and an open source license, commercial or not.
  • What: Pro free for 12 months: unlimited boards and ideas, custom CSS and Slack notifications.
  • After 12 months: non-commercial projects can renew for free while the project is active. Commercial projects (open core, or backed by a company) move to the normal $19/month, or back to the free plan.

To claim it, sign up free and create your board, then email support@getusernote.com from your account’s email address with a link to the repository. Pro is usually switched on within a working day.

Why a board instead of issues

  • Bugs stay in issues; ideas go on the board, so triage gets easier.
  • Anyone can vote, including users who don’t have or want a GitHub account.
  • Duplicates get votes instead of new issues: people find the existing idea and add their vote.
  • A public roadmap (Planned, In progress, Completed) answers “is this on the list?” before anyone asks.
  • An AI summary of the top requests groups them into themes when you’re planning a release.

Link it from your README

Your board has its own page, so a link is enough. A badge works well near the top of the README:

[![Feature requests](https://img.shields.io/badge/feature%20requests-vote-4f46e5)](https://getusernote.com/b/ws_YOUR_BOARD_ID)

Add ?view=roadmap to the link to open the roadmap instead. You can also point your issue template’s “Feature request” option at the board, so ideas land there instead of in issues.

Add a Feedback button to your docs site

The widget is one script tag (about 5 KB, no cookies), so it works on any docs site you can add a script to. In Docusaurus, add it to scripts in docusaurus.config.js:

scripts: [
  { src: 'https://getusernote.com/widget.js', 'data-workspace': 'ws_YOUR_BOARD_ID', defer: true },
],

In VitePress, add it to head in your VitePress config (.vitepress/config.js or .ts):

head: [
  ['script', { src: 'https://getusernote.com/widget.js', 'data-workspace': 'ws_YOUR_BOARD_ID', defer: '' }],
],

Good to know

  • Boards are public and voters stay anonymous: no names, emails or GitHub handles.
  • New ideas wait for your approval by default, so spam never shows.
  • The board keeps a small “Powered by UserNote” link unless you turn it off in the board’s settings. Keeping it is a kind way to say thanks, but it’s up to you.
  • Export every idea to CSV at any time, and import from another tool’s CSV export.

Set it up

  • Sign up free at getusernote.com and create a board. Give it a name your visitors will recognize; it shows at the top of the board.
  • Add it to your site with the guide for your platform, or share the board’s own link.
  • Turn on Require approval (it’s on by default) if you want to check ideas before they appear.
